About Bertha Ruby
Here's a story I've been told about Bertha Shiffman Ruby by my mother and by my grandmother (Bertha's granddaughter and daughter, respectively):
Bertha was the first in her family to leave Belarus/Russia/USSR and came to the United States. She worked hard and saved as much of her earnings as possible for the purpose of financing the migration of most of her siblings to the US. One of her siblings thought that she must have been "very rich" to finance this migration and upon reaching the US asked Bertha to show her all of her clothes. In response Bertha opened her nearly empty closet and said "you are my clothes", meaning of course that her family, rather than material goods, were her riches - or that she spent her money on relocating her family rather than on material trappings.
I don't know whether or not she financed the move of brother Pichas to Israel, where he took the name Ben Sira and became the patriarch of a large family.
