About Bessie "Bright Eyes" Tahamont
- Daughter of Tahamot of the Abanaki Tribe of Algonquins and was born on the banks of Lake George.She left her tribe for a better education.Went to public school No 84 while living with the Van Cleef family on Flushing Ave. /Source: New York Times 18 Sep 1909
"Bessie Darkcloud, an Indian schoolgirl of NY, was known as "Bright Eyes" is dead in Astoria, L.I. She was born on the shores of Lake George 15 years ago, the daughter of Tahamont of the Abenaki tribe of Algonquins. The girl spent 14 years of her life at Lake George, but last year wished to go to school, and wanted to live with Irene Van Cleef of NY. She showed ability in art and aptitude in other studies. Illness came upon her a few days ago, and she died Friday."
