Betsy Travis was born on June 15, 1819, to Richard Travis and Naomi Connelly. She was married to Alfred van Wagoner on February 5, 1843, and had two sons with him, Milton and George, before her death on August 11, 1848, in Oxford, Oakland, Michigan.
Betsy, the youngest child of Richard and Naomi Connelly Travis, was named for her mother's sister, Betsy Bice. She went there to live when quite young, remaining until she was about eighteen years of age. Her mother died two years after and the following summer the family came to Michigan. She was married to Alfred Van Wagoner in class meeting, on the Sabbath of Feb 5, 1843, in the log school house in the Travis settlement. Michael Van Wagoner, Alfred's father, came from New York state in 1832 and settled first in Stony Creek, township of Avon. In 1834 he took up land in the western part of the township of Oxford, where he lived until his death. They raised a family of seven sons and a daughter. Alfred and his brother Lorenzo took up one hundred and sixty acres of government land, joining their fathers farm on section 24, township of Brandon. It also joined the Bice Travis' farm. Betsy Travis Van Wagoner was a devoted Christian woman and died happy after a short and very painful illness, Aug. 11, 1848. She left two sons, Milton A. and George W.
