About Betsy West
Betsy Mitchell was born in Southbury, Connecticut. She was the daughter of Jared Mitchell and Sarah Ann King. [History of Michigan, Volume 3, By Charles Moore, pg. 1380, googlebooks]. Her parents, Jared and Sarah married 13 May 1792, Southbury, Conn. [pg. 479, History of Ancient Woodbury, Connecticut, Vol. 3, by William Cothren]. Betsy was the 1st wife of common school reformer, newspaper publisher, and later Indianapolis Mayor, Henry Franklin West, Sr. who died in office 1856. It is believed that she was buried in Dayton, Montgomery Co., Ohio, 1842, probably in an early Presbyterian churchyard (perhaps downtown Dayton- near 3rd Street Church?)--but the precise location of her grave is still needed. She may have been buried as Betsy West or was she called Bessie West--which is why several namesakes, i.e. Bessie Mitchell West, b. 7 Apr. 1869 (Historian of Mayflower Society, Detroit)[not born 1871], Bessie Mitchell West Halsey, continued?
