Betty stayed behind in Berlin in September 1938 when her daughter Elly and 13-year-old granddaughter Helga (my mother) fled across the Belgian border. Betty suffered all the degradations of the Nazi period from the November pogroms that shortly followed until the deportation of Jews from Berlin began in October 1941. She was 66, not yet scheduled for transport but aware that evacuations of elderly Jews and widows could begin at any time. She died on February 26, 1942 and is buried at Weißensee Cemetery. Her cause of death is unknown at this time.
