About Beulah Dutton

GEDCOM Note

Beulah was the daughter of Benjamin Whitmarsh & Mary Fish. She married 27 Feb 1801 to Samuel Dutton. Col. Samuel Dutton, his wife Beulah (Bulah on tombstone), and their daughter Elcena are buried in the Cazenovia South Cemetery, located on Number Nine Road, about two miles south of the village of Cazenovia, New York. Col. Samuel Dutton was reportedly buried with Masonic honors. In 1834, Beulah Dutton joined the 1st Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia, of which her daughter, Mrs. Harriet Murdock, was already a member, having joined in 1827.

In his militia service, Samuel was promoted to Lieutenant in 1804; 2nd Major in 1806; Major in 1810; & Lieutenant Colonel in 1812. In the War of 1812, Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Dutton commanded the 2nd Regiment of the New York state militia; in fact, this group was known as "Samuel Dutton's Regiment."

Samuel Dutton was only 40 when he died on 9 Oct 1815, the year after the War of 1812 ended. Perhaps his health had been broken by his service in the war. He wrote a will on 20 Sept 1815, leaving half his estate to his wife Beulah, and the other half to his children, who are not named. At his death, he left seven children, aged 1 to 13: 1. Harriet Dutton b. 1 Jan 1802; d. 18 Aug 1840, age 38; m. 22 Feb 1823 to Otis Murdock 2. Elcena Dutton b. 21 Jan 1804; d. 29 June 1827 at Cazenovia, NY, age 23 of a fractured skull when she was thrown from an overturning wagon. 3. Joseph S. Dutton b. 8 Oct 1805; listed as a farmer and head of household in the 1840 census of Dundee Township, Monroe County, Michigan; d. 22 Nov 1847 4. Justin Benjamin Whitmarsh Dutton (our ancestor) b. 5 Apr 1808 in New York state; d. 24 Aug 1861 at Dundee, Michigan of Bright's disease; buried with his wife in Oak Grove Cemetery south of Dundee at the corner of Dixon & Summerfield Roads. Justin married 4 Feb 1838 at Dundee to widow Julia Ann (Remer) Roof, born 1806 in New Jersey; d. 20 May 1893, probably at Dundee. They had one daughter Julia Ann, and four sons—all of whom served in the Civil War from Michigan: John Clinton, Warren J., Joseph Samuel, & Nelson. Julia's first husband was J.C. Roof, who I believe was the namesake for my Great-Grandfather, John Clinton Dutton. 5. Rasselas T. Dutton b. 22 Feb 1810 in New York; d. 8 Dec 1876 of consumption (tuberculosis) at Dundee, Michigan; farmer. At age 64, he married on 28 Feb 1874 at Dundee to widow Mary B. (Van Vleet) Miller, b. 1823; d. 1908; buried Oak Grove Cemetery south of Dundee. 6. Emiline Dutton b. 18 Jan 1812; d. 12 July 1840; m. 21 Feb 1833 to a Mr. Perry; (may be the Emeline Perry 1812-1840 on findagrave #127215663, wife of H.W. Perry) 7. Mary Jennett Dutton b. 26 March 1814; m. 10 July 1835; no further record

I don't know when the youngest daughter, Mary Jennett, died; but note the other three daughters all died before their mother's death in 1851, at the age of 70. By then, the three sons had all migrated west to Michigan; so let's hope Beulah's youngest child was still living in or near Cazenovia to care for the mother, who was widowed for over 35 years. Would that Time could tell us how she managed to raise seven children by herself in a frontier village in northwestern New York state.
