About Bidhyanath Pokhrel
Bidhyanath Pokhrel, a Nepali poet and politician, played a significant role in the country's political landscape. He emerged as a prominent democratic figure, opposing the Rana regime. Notably, during the 1951 democratic revolution in Nepal, he assumed leadership of the Dhankuta Front.
Within the Nepali Congress, Bidhyanath Pokhrel held a prominent position, demonstrating his dedication to democratic principles. In 1959, he secured a parliamentary ticket from the Dhankura constituency, which was later reassigned to someone else. However, undeterred by this setback, he valiantly chose to run as an independent candidate, even though he eventually faced defeat. His unwavering determination and sharp political acumen caught the attention of King Mahendra, who appointed him as a lifelong member of the Raj Sabha, akin to the UK's Privy Council. This appointment was in recognition of his commitment to democracy, even during difficult times when he had not yet rejoined the Nepali Congress.
Tragically, Bidhyanath Pokhrel passed away on 25 August 1994 in Kathmandu due to a cardiac attack. His contributions to Nepali politics and literature left a lasting impact on the nation's history.
