About Blessed Marie-Catherine de Saint-Augustin

Overview

Blessed Catherine was born into an aristocratic Norman family and a descendant of Thomas a Becket. She entered the monastery of the Canonesses of St. Augustine of the Mercy of Jesus in Bayeux. In 1648 she arrived in New France. She contracted the plague, from which she was cured, which she attributed to the Blessed Mother, through means of a statue which Catherine had brought with her from France. This statue of the Blessed Mother is still revered as mysterious. In New France, she nursed the sick with the Hospitallers at the Hotel Dieu. Blassed Catherine also served as treasurer of the hospital as well as forming new candidates to the community as Novice Mistress. She died at the hospital she helped run. She is known as one of the six founders of the Catholic Church in Canada. on 9 March 1984 Pope John Paul II beatified her.
