About Bodil Kirsten Nielsen
- Immigration: On the first voyage of the Fritz Reuter, left Hamburg 25 November 1874, with ice drifting on the River Elbe, damaged and came back into yards at Cuxhaven. Resumed joureny, outbreak of scarlet fever and typhoid fever. 13 deaths. Patients suffering from fever were bathed up to 5 times daily, and it was necessary to appoint an assistant nurse. Bodil Madsen was given further assistance as a nurse, and the assistant people were paid the princely sum of L2.0.0d. Captina Pyen did not like the idea of sailing through Cook Strait, and so the ship took another 14 days to reach the port of Napier by sailing up the East Coast. Captain Peyn was able to bring the ship to anchor off Napier after a 91 day passage. The passengers walked to the barracks. The Madsen family stayed until 30 March 1875 then set off for Norsewood. - Mar 19 1875
