The founder of the Kowalski family, to which Bohdan Kowalski belonged, was Lorenz Feige. Lorenz Feige was born in 1824 in Silesia (Uszyce near Gorzów Śląski). In 1851, he married Karolina Przyrodek. In 1863, he crossed the border with the Kingdom of Poland under the assumed name of Michał Kowalski and initially settled in the vicinity of Wieluń (Parzymiecha, Widoradz). The first son, born in 1863 in Parzymiechy, was registered under the name of Jan Kowalski. It was Bohdan Kowalski's grandfather. After some time, Lorenz Feige returned to his original name and settled with his family in Warsaw. His second son, born in Widoradz in 1872, was called Michał Fajga (Feige). Jan Kowalski remained with the surname given to him in the birth certificate and such surnames were also used by his descendants.
