Citation:
Remained on the field under heavy fire to succor his superior officer.
When the Civil War began, he enlisted in the 1st Michigan Infantry and was commissioned Captain. On July 21, 1861, at the Battle of Bull Run, after his superior officer was wounded he took command directing troops until himself wounded and was captured. He was prisoner exchanged in January 1862 and was appointed Colonel in command of the 17th Michigan Infantry in August 1862. For gallant conduct with his regiment at the Battle of South Mountain Maryland, in September 1862, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in March 1865. After the war, he was elected a member of Michigan House of Representatives in 1873 and to the State Senate in 1891 and 1892. For his actions at Bull Run in July 1861, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor on January 7, 1895. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
