About Brig. Gen. David Hunter Kinzie
Civil War Union Army Officer. At the start of the Civil War, he was commissioned in the Union Army in May 1861 as a 1st Lieutenant in the 5th United States Regular Artillery. As commander of the 5th Artillery's Battery K, he distinguished himself in the Fredericksburg Campaign, the Chancellorsville Campaign, and the Battle of Gettysburg, where his unit fought on Culp's Hill and along Baltimore Pike. He was brevetted Major, US Regular Army for "good conduct and gallant services during the war". After the end of the conflict, he remained in the Regular Army as a Major in the 3rd Artillery. Stationed in the West, he served as the Commandant of Presidio in San Francisco, California, and retired a Brigadier General.
