About Brig. Gen. James Croft
Brig.-Gen. James Crofts was born illegitimately. He is the son of James Scott, 1st and last Duke of Monmouth. He married Salusbury Taylor, daughter of Sir Thomas Taylor, 1st Bt. and Anne Cotton.
There is an unresolved matter about the display name for James Croft. He is called "Brigadier General" in www. thepeerage.com, which cites Burke's peerage. He is listed as dying with the rank of "Major General" in Wikipedia, with no source attached. Wikipedia further states that he served as Colonel of Crofts Dragoons, an early cavalry unit of the 9th Dragoons (now known as the Queen's Royal Lancers). As soon as a proper citation of his rank can be found, he'll receive his promotion.
