Joseph Lancaster Brent (November 30, 1826 – November 27, 1905) was a lawyer and politician in California, Louisiana and Maryland and a brigadier general in the Confederate army.

Joseph Lancaster Brent was born on November 30, 1826, in Charles County, Maryland. the son of William Leigh Brent and Marie Fenwick Brent. He was educated by private teachers and received his legal education at Georgetown University. In 1870 Brent and Roselle Kenner of Louisiana were married.

He died on November 27, 1905 in Baltimore, Maryland, being survived by his wife and two children, Nannie M. and Duncan K.

From The Alexandria Gazette and Virginia Advertiser, of Tuesday, Nov. 28, 1905:

Gen. Joseph Lancaster Brent, who fought in the Confederate Army, died yesterday afternoon after a long illness due to his advanced age at his home in Baltimore. At the time of Gen. E. Kirby Smith's surrender, he commanded Brent's cavalry brigade and the front lines extended from the Arkansas River to the Gulf, including the forts on the Red River. This brigade consisted of the 2nd, 5th, 7th, and 18th Louisiana Cavalry. He commanded the wooden gunboat Queen, which captured the United States ironclad Indianola on the Mississippi River in February 1863.

Gen. J. L. Brent Dead: Was a noted lawyer and Civil War veteran

Gen. Joseph Lancaster Brent, a prominent member of the Baltimore bar, died at his home in that city yesterday afternoon. Gen. Brent had been confined to his bed but about 10 days, although he had been in failing health since last spring. He suffered with heart trouble and only after he was taken to his bed was his condition thought to be serious.

At his bedside when the end came were his wife, daughter Miss Nannie M. Brent, and son Mr. Duncan K. Brent, who attended him in a faithful manner during his last illness.

Gen Brent had been identified with the revolutionary societies for a number of years, and was the president of the Maryland Society of the Colonial Wars up to the time of his death. He was born Nov. 30, 1826, in Charles County, Maryland. He was educated by private teachers and was graduated at Georgetown College. He later studied law and was graduated. His parents were William Leigh and Marie Fenwick Brent. He married in 1870 Miss Roselle, daughter of Duncan Farren Kenner of Louisiana. He served in the artillery and cavalry under General Lee; was major on the staff of Gen. John B. Magruder in Virginia; was chief of artillery and adjutant under Gen. Richard Taylor in Louisiana in 1862. He was made colonel of artillery on April 17, 1864; brigadier general in October 1864.

Gen. Joseph Lancaster Brent, of the Confederate Army, died Monday after long illness due to advanced age at his home in Baltimore. Soldier, sugar planter, and lawyer, Gen. Joseph L. Brent had always been above all a man of distinct citizenship. He was born Nov. 30, 1826, in Charles County, the son of William Leigh Brent, and was twice a member of Congress.

Gen. Joseph Lancaster Brent, aged 79 years, died at his resident in Baltimore on Nov. 27. He was a native of Charles County, had been a soldier in the Confederate Army, a lawyer, and a Louisiana planter. As a soldier, eh rose rapidly from the ranks. He practiced law in California until the Civil War, when he returned east and joined the army.
