During the summer of 1776, he built Fort Isaacs at the head of the Yadkin River. This fort was later called Fort Defiance, most asserting after the war. Capt. Elijah Isaacs and his company marched under Col. Martin Armstrong and Brig. Gen. Griffith Rutherford in the Cherokee Expedition of August to November of 1776 on the eastern side of the Blue Ridge Mountains. On 4/25/1778, Elijah Isaacs was commissioned as a 1st Major under Col. Benjamin Cleveland in the Wilkes County Regiment of Militia, replacing Maj. William Lewis, who had recently resigned.
During the 1Q of 1779, Elijah Isaacs was commissioned as a full Colonel (some claim he was only a Lt. Colonel), alongside Col. Benjamin Cleveland in the Wilkes County Regiment of Militia.
During the Summer of 1780, not long after the battle of Colson's Mill, Col. Elijah Wilkes was given command of an "ad hoc" group of Militia companies and ordered to go help SC Col. Thomas Sumter. On 8/18/1780, Col. Elijah Isaacs was captured by the British at the battle of Fishing Creek, SC, and ultimately taken to St. Augustine, FL, where he was confined until he was exchanged in July of 1781.
After his exchange, Col. Elijah Isaac returned to active duty, and joined the also recently-exchanged Brig. Gen. Griffith Rutherford in the Wilmington Expedition to kick out the British garrison led by Maj. James H. Craig. After the British evacuated Wilmington, Col. Elijah Isaacs and his men are known to have sacked the noted Loyalist Col. David Fanning's headquarters at Cox's Mill in Randolph County on 12/10/1781.
