Briggs Howland was born in Wiscasset, but for several years in his earlier life had been a sea-faring man. Later he became a farmer, and was engaged in that avocation up to the time of his death, which occurred when he was about 65 years old. "
Briggs went to New York to work on the Erie Canal, and that coincides with the time that John Howland left Maine for New York. The book also has a copy of a letter from Evelyn Howland, Phillips, Maine, to a genealogical researcher, dated Dec. 65, 1921, which says Zebulon Howland came to the area in 1808 and Isaac Howland came in 1809.
