A family man of integrity. He was a quiet man who never liked conflict. Bryan had a great sense of humour and loved to create skits and act in them. He left the raising of his girls largely to Margaret and would come home and disappear into the large shed that housed the boats he was commissioned to build. He made them by hand from wood using steam to mould the hulls. He was self taught from books and made boats for a number of years before demolishing the shed to make way for a larger back garden that Margaret turned into a vegetable garden. A creative man, he dreamed of becoming an architect but the war years and his return to marry Margaret and provide for her and his family meant he never studied. He did, however, build a beach house and add onto the tiny house in korokoro. Bryan loved making wooden large toys for his grand children. Undemonstrative, a gentleman, lover of fine clothes and generously kind. Bryan loved to sing and had a fine tenor voice. For a period of time he was in a male voice choir in Wellington. He played a lot of Mario Lanza records. An enduring memory is Bryan 's ability to whistle. We would often hear his strong melodic trills as he worked around the house or on his boats. Bryan had a quiet, determined Christian faith. He was raised a Methodist but began to go to Petone Gospel Hall because Margaret made it clear that she would not be ' unequally yoked' to an unbeliever. Bryan had a conversion experience and remained in the Open Brethren church, later attending Elizabeth St Chapel in Wellington regularly. After he and Margaret retired they went to Hong Kong and worked at the Youth with a Mission base. Bryan worked in maintenance and Margaret worked in administration. Their daughter Rachel was there at the time because she was in the Feet performance team as well as cooking for the base.
