Burdett was an inventor and manufacturer of gas plant machinery. Known as having a genial personality, he had a wide circle of acquaintances, both in America and abroad. In 1881 he organized the Steam Heating Co. of Hartford and in 1882 the first Electric Lighting Company. To compensate for transmission loss with steam he substituted gas and found cheaper methods of gas making. In the early part of the 20th century he was an active member of the firm of Loomis-Pettibone Engineers and President of the Loomis Family Association.
Burdett is found in numerous records including some of his travels abroad. Burdett 29 and Lucretia 27 Loomis are listed in the Boston, Passenger and Crew Lists, 1820-1954, having travelled from Liverpool, England and arriving in Boston, MA on 25 Oct 1867 (National Archives and Records Administration (NARA); Washington, D.C.; Crew Lists of Vessels Arriving at Boston, Massachusetts, 1917-1943; Publication Number: T938; Roll: 71).
In the 1860 census taken on June 26th, Burdett and Lucretia were both 22 and he was a farmer; they had one domestic servant (1860; Census Place: Suffield, Hartford, Connecticut; Roll: M653_79; Page: 654; Image: 265; Family History Library Film: 803079).
In the 1880 census of West Hartford, Hartford CT, the family is listed as Burdette 42 "Real Estate Broker", Lucretia 42, Esther 18, Grace L 16, Cordelia F 14, and Burdette 8. Everyone and their parents were born in Conn (1880; Census Place: West Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut; Roll: 100; Family History Film: 1254100; Page: 620B; Enumeration District: 059; Image: 0362).
The 1900 census found them still in West Hartford and the family listed as Burdett 62 b Jan 1838 occp "Gas Manufacturer", Lucretia M 62 b Feb 1838, Grace L 37 b Jand 1863, and Esther Tucker, Lucretia's mother, 89 b Mar 1811, b CT and both of her parents b CT with 1 of 2 children living; Burdett and Lucretia had been married 41 years and all 4 of their children were still living, but only Grace L was in the home (1900; Census Place: West Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut; Roll: 139; Page: 10B; Enumeration District: 0224; FHL microfilm: 1240139).
In 1910 only Grace L 46 and single was in the home but all 4 of the children were living (1910; Census Place: West Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut; Roll: T624_132; Page: 46A; Enumeration District: 0243; FHL microfilm: 1374145).
