Burl West, 96, of Waxahachie, Texas passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family and friends. Burial will be at the Lakeview Cemetery in Waxahachie, Texas.

On June 19, 1920, Burl was born in Groveton, Texas to William (Bill) and Amber West. He grew up and attended school in Groveton, Texas.

Burl served his country in the United States Army from 1942 – 1946. He was a World War II hero. He was a member of the VFW Post 3894, District 30, and served Commander for eight years. He was a lifetime member of the Masons and was a member of the American Legion. He took pride in being able to serve with the honor guard. Burl was a hardworking man and always provided for his family.

He assisted in 1947 - 1953 in the construction of the Garrison Dam, on the Missouri River in Central North Dakota.

He moved his family to Waxahachie, Texas in 1959. He worked as a mechanic for several years at various Waxahachie businesses. He attended Ellis County Cowboy Church.

Burl was very outgoing and friendly man. He never met a stranger. One of his favorite memories was attending the Ellis County Honor Flight in 2008 with his fellow service members and his beloved friend Greg Compton to attend the Inauguration of President Barack Obama.

Burl had a passion for hunting and fishing. He always loved tinkering with anything mechanical. He worked on many boats for members of the community. He was also fond of sitting on his back porch enjoying nature and life in the present.

Burl is survived by his loving partner of 12 years, Evelyn Novotny: daughter Mary Lou West McFadin, son Randolph (Randy) West; both of Waxahachie; 3 granddaughters: Alisha West Wickens, Lori Leffingwell Tapp, and Brandi Hale Vencill. Great Grandchildren: Shannon, Megan, Tyler, Zachary, and Bentley. Great-great grandchildren: Alexis, Laila, and Gabrielle.

His loving partner’s family: son: Bobby, Wife Becky, their son Brad, wife Becca and children, and son Brian. Son Billy, son Jeremy, wife Tiffani and son. Daughter: Hillary, husband Scott and Children, Teresa, and Dan McCarthy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his late wife Freda West of 49 years, son Fredrick West, and grand-son Bryson.
