Bvt. Brigadier General Daniel Tompkins Van Buren (USA)

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. As a West Point graduate on July 1, 1847, he served in the regular Army as a 1st Lieutenant and fought in the Mexican War. He resigned on March 31, 1855, to pursue study becoming an engineer and lawyer.

At the outbreak of the rebellion, he was Captain of Engineers, in the 20th New York State Militia. Called to service, he was reinstated as a Major on the Staff of Major General John Adams Dix and was promoted Colonel, Chief of Staff in June 1862. He later served as Additional Aide-de-Camp and Adjutant General on the staff of Major General Joseph Hooker.

For faithful and meritorious services, he was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865.

After the war, he became an assistant professor of natural and experimental philosophy at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point.
