Grandmother Ceciie ruled us with great love, discipline and dignity. Woe to the family member, old or young, who failed to appear at the Sunday lunch over which she presided; about thirty were seated together around one solid table, three generations of us.

The children were mainly interested in getting away as soon as possible for so long with the grown-ups. We disappeared as discreetly as possible to rush to a silent movie. We had to be back before 5 o’clock for another meal, Kaffeetafel, otherwise our absence would have been discovered. Afterwards the men played skat or bridge until dinnertime - that is how it was for many years, and Grandmother would not have wanted it to be otherwise.
