About C. Knox Marshall
Charles Knox Marshall aka C. Knox Marshall was the County Recorder for Solano County, California, and a native of Booneville, MO.
From History of Solano County...and histories of its cities, towns...etc. ... By J. P. Munro-Fraser:
Charles Knox Marshall, County Recorder, and a native of Howard Co., MO, was early sent to district schools, where he laid the foundations for a higher education, which he received in Benicia, Solano County, at Charles M. Blake's Collegiate Institute, now known as St. Augustine's Academy. At the age of twelve his parents moved from Howard Co., to Saline, where the subject of this memoir abode until 1852, when he came to this state, settling in Yolo County. January, 1853, he settled near Collinsville, Solano County but subsequently made a permanent residence in Benicia. He was born January 10, 1837. Leona, daughter of Alexander Irvine, was the name of his wife, now deceased. Pauline and Lulu are their children.
According to the book "History of the city of Spokane and Spokane County, Washington", in 1885 he was the "merchant and proprietor of an hay and feed store in the area of Oakland, Ca."
He is also mentioned in the book "The Patrons of Husbandry on the Pacific Coast" on page 258.

The adobe was reoccupied in 1853 by Lindsay Powell Marshall, Sr. and his sons
John and Charles Knox. Marshall, a native of Booneville, Missouri, was a land
speculator and cattle rancher who had acquired land in Benicia in 1852. Marshall
and his sons took possession of the Hastings Adobe as squatters, although they
purchased the property from Hastings in 1854 (Gregory 1912, Kyle 1990,
Theodoratus et al. 1980). The Marshall’s raised livestock on the ranch and
expanded their landholdings by systematically acquiring additional acreage.
Through a combination of cash entry patents, a homestead patent, and patents of
swamp and overflow land, the Marshall family added more than 1,000 acres to
their holdings by 1873. From 1866 to 1873, the Marshall’s shifted the emphasis
of their agricultural enterprise from cattle ranching to small-scale farming and
dairying. Winter wheat was a prominent product of the Marshall ranch. Portions
of the Marshall ranch were sold to John Kierce and Edward Jenkins by 1880, and
Samuel Stratton acquired the adobe in the 1890s.
