John Kvidera was 14 at the time.
“We heard about it on the radio, and we knew he was there,” John said. “We didn’t know what to do.” "They were pinned to the radio trying to get news," said John's wife, Pat Kvidera. About a week later, the family received a telegram saying William was missing in action. It would be more than two months before they learned his fate.
In the meantime, rumors flourished.
“We heard he was in a hospital in California,” John said.
But all hope dissipated when a second Navy Department telegram -- dated Feb. 17, 1942 -- arrived. “After exhaustive search it has been found impossible to locate your son William Lester Kiverda (sic), carpenter’s mate third class U.S. Navy, and he has been officially declared to have lost his life in the service of his country as of December 7th, 1941. The Department expresses to you its sincere sympathy.”
