John Spafford settled in Groton, Massachusetts probably emigrating from Rowley (Georgetown), Massachusetts (Spofford Genealogy, p. 50).

Some doubt exists that this John Spafford is the son of Jonathan Spofford but the circumstances favor this theory strongly (ibid).

In the cemetery at Pepperell, Massachusetts, a stone is inscribed, "John Spafford who was a faithful deacon of this Church about six years, until he fell asleep July 7th, 1754, in his 40th year of his age.
