Caleb Ellis

His children (William F. b. 1828, is child of first marriage to a Wakefield, Francis M. b: 2-10-1830 (probably Roane Co.) Thomas C. b.1834, Rebecca, b: 1837, Sarah b: 1839, John E. b: 1842, Caleb, Jr. b: 1847, Parthenia E. b: 1850) were probably all born in Tenn. Some of the family still lived in N.C. and S.C. so it could be that he went back there but I rather doubt it, as the trend was toward westward movement. I have no proof without doing some research into land and census records, but it appears that he was residing in Tenn. while raising his family.

Various published biographical sketches of this family indicates that Caleb's father Francis was born in S.C. and/or married in S.C. The family lived in Rutherford Co., N.C. and York Co., S.C. both counties are located on the NC/SC border. An uncle of Francis (Benjamin Ellis) operated a ferry on the French Broad River between Gaffney, S.C. and Boiling Springs, N.C. So there was a lot of hopping back and forth. State boundaries did not mean much at that time. However, most indications are that the family was living in the Rowan Co., N.C. area at the time of Francis' birth. (Ellis Cousins Newsletter)
