About Caleb Mix

  • 38. Joshua Tuttle, b. Dec. 19, 1675; prob. the Dea. Joshua Tuttle men. of the Council at Amity, 1742, for the ordination of Reb. Mr. Woodbridge. In 1729-30 he sold to John Humiston of New Haven, land laid out to my father, Thomas Tuttle, dec. In 1733, sold to bro. Caleb, Lt. in land of Uncle David Tuttle. In 1742 joined with bro. Caleb and nephew Moses in a quitclaim. In 1705, he bought of Uncle Simon Tuttle his rt. in the Branford division; m. Feb. 26, 1710, MARY, dau. of Nathan and Esther BRADLEY and wid. of CALEB MIX;* b. 1672; twin with Abigail; (2) after 1741, Phebe, dau. of Ralph Lines and wid. of Nathan Clark. [116]. He lived on the old homestead given him by his father, now a part of the college square about opposite the old State house. In 1750 he sold a strip off the south side 20 ft. wide by 250 ft. deep, reserving a strip of 1 foot wide on which a part of the house stood. It was bought by the college to make room for Conn. hall, (old south middle). It was the third land purchase made by the college; the second being in 1745 of a strip of the Ball lot. In 1760, Phebe Tuttle, wid. of Joshua conveyed her right in this property to Asa Todd and Mary his wife. It is described as a house in New Haven and about 1 1/4 acres of land, bounded by the highway on the market place; north on land of Benj. Franklin, Esq. of Phila. in part and heirs of Samuel Mix, dec.; west on heirs of David Austin; south on land of Stephen Ball and partly on college land. James A. Hillhouse and James Sperry, jr., wit.; Phebe makes her X mark, but Miss Emma L. Balek of N. Hav., a desc. of Dea. Joshua Tuttle has a beautifully written letter (without date) from Phebe Tuttle to Asa and Mary Todd, in which she calls herself "your loving mother." and Jesse Clark signs "your loving brother." An only child.
