About Caleb Trueblood

Caleb was born 14 April 1732[1] in Pasquotank, North Carolina. [2] He was the youngest son of Amos Trueblood and Elizabeth Cartwright.

On the 1754 tax list Caleb is listed as having one white poll and 2 black polls. Clearly he has moved and set up his own household[3].

On 18 October 1758 at the Newbegun Monthly Meeting he married Mary Conner, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Conner. He was 26 and she just 17.

Caleb was chosen as clerk of the Pasquotank Monthly Meeting on 7 August 1760.

Caleb and Mary had two children together before she died in childbirth, aged just 20, in 1761.

After waiting the prescribed one year following his wife's death, Caleb asked permission on 3 February 1763 from the Surrey County Monthly Meting in Virginia. The Black Water Monthly Meting gives its assent on 19 February and Caleb marries the widow Mourning Merriott two days later on 21 February. Mourning received her certificate of membership from the Pasquotank Meeting on 20 August 1763. Mourning was born Cornwell in 1742 and had married aged just 14 in 1756 to Benjamin Merriott.

They were both heavily involved with the Pasquotank Meeting. Besides being clerk, Caleb was chosen overseer 20 May 1767. Mourning was chosen elder 20 May 1772 and overseer on 16 June 1773, aged 31; tragically she died just 18 months later, in the winter of 1774.

Caleb and Mourning had six children together in their eleven years together. Sadly five of these die as infants or young adults; only Mary reaches maturity and has children of her own.

On 19 March 1777 Caleb asks permission to marry for a third time to the Perquimans Monthly Meeting. He is granted this and on 6 April he married Anna Delano, the widow of Amasa Delano, at the Newbegun Meeting House in Pasquotank. Anna was born Newby in 1745, the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Newby.

Anna was granted membership of the Pasquotank Meeting on 18 June 1777 and was chosen overseer the same day.

Anna and Caleb go on to have six children together in the next thirteen years, meaning Caleb has fourteen children in total over a 31 year span.

In 1779 Caleb is listed in the Quaker section with one tract of land, covering 613 acres and with a value of £8,218[4]. This is the highest ratable value of any of the Truebloods.

In 1781 Caleb is granted pay for service in the Revolutionary Service, which is unusual for a Quaker[5].

By 1789 he is holding 562 acres, having presumably given some to his sons. He is assessed for 2 white and one black poll. Presumably this is a freedman as he is in good standing with the Friends[6]. And yet the following year in the 1790 census[7] he is listed with 3 slaves among the 12 persons in his household. But by the 1800 census[8] there are six people and no slaves, certainly none are listed in his will written the year after.

His will was written and dated 9 February 1801 and he passed away about 1804.
