About Calvin Russell Gaunt

C.R. GAUNT

Calvin R. GAUNT, 202 North Fourth avenue, for years prominent among the union carpenters of Marshalltown, died at 5 a.m. Thursday at his home after an illness of 11 weeks following a stroke of paralysis.
A native of Marshall county, Mr. GAUNT long was active in republican party affairs, the cause of union labor and in the activities of Sons of Union Veterans, the latter because of the war record of his father, O. C. GAUNT, who served in Company E. 83rd Indiana infantry. While a resident of Ferguson he served as justice of the peace and constable of Greencastle township, was precinct committeeman of Greencastle No. 2 precinct and twice was a candidate for the republican nomination for sheriff, in 1914 and 1916.
Calvin Russell GAUNT was born Sept. 17, 1869, at Clemons where he grew to manhood. He then moved to Dallas county where he lived for a few years, before moving to LeGrand where he attended Palmer College, being graduated in 1893. On April 3, 1894 he was married to Miss Charlotte STRICKLAND of Gilman at Gilman, which was their home for the next five years. The next 10 years Mr. GAUNT taught school at Laurel and Ferguson and later managed the elevator at Ferguson. In 1910, Mr. and Mrs. GAUNT moved to this city. Mr. GAUNT followed the carpenters' trade since moving to this city.
Besides his widow he is survivied by two children, Mrs. L.K. STRINE and William Earl GAUNT of this city; three brothers, Luther E. GAUNT, city, and I.M. and W.M. GAUNT, LeGrand. Two grand-children also survive.
He joined the Methodist church at Gilman in 1894. He was a member of Banner Lodge No. 123, I.O.O.F., and Marshall Rebekah lodge No. 40, Carpenters' local No. 1112 and the Sons of Union Veterans of Marshalltown.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Estel funeral home with burial in Prairie View cemetery at Gilman, where Banner Lodge No. 123 will have charge of the I.O.O.F. burial service* Reference: [https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/51992065/calvin-russell-gaunt Find A Grave Memorial] - [https://www.geni.com/projects/SmartCopy/18783 SmartCopy]: ''Apr 17 2020, 0:26:17 UTC''
