About Calvin Gogswell Morgan, Sr.
Merchant.
1807 Calvin got a merchant licence. At one time the firm name was Morgan and Jacobs, then C Morgan and Son. He became a prosperous merchant and owned a large track of land north of Clinch Street.
He was a trustee of the Knoxville Female Academy.
He was on a committee to superintend subscriptions to the Bank of Tennessee at Knoxville and 1812 became one of the directors of the bank.
1816 he was appointed one of 3 tax assessors for Knoxville.
1821/22 was appointed trustee of East Tennessee College.
1822 he was captain of the fire company.
He erected the first cotton-gin in Knoxville after his merchant business was dissolved.
He donated the 2 acres of land that the main building of the Tennessee School for the Deaf was built on (it later became the City Hall)
