Martha Waite and three of her children were captured during the famous Hatfield massacre. She was with child at the time and gave birth to a baby girl while being held captive in Canada. She named the child Canada. Shortly after the child's birth Benjamin Waite (a noted Indian scout) found the captives a total of 17 woman and children and negotiated a peaceful release. They lost three people during their long journey from Hatfield to Canada, two children probably to illness and the elements and one man who was burned.
