About Capitán Juan de Vitoria Carvajal

Note from Joseph H. Sanchez, ninth grandson : I am manager of this site and when I created this profile I had the correct father as Conquistador Juan de Carvajal, the brother of Conquistador Luis de Carvajal, governor and founder of The Kingdom of Nueva Leon. Juan de Vitorio Carvajal joined his uncle Luis de Carvajal and assisted him as a nephew. He had already been in the New Spain and acted as a interpreter of Indian languages and as a soldier. He was born in the New World and his father was the Conquistador Juan de Carvajal and his mother was a Native Aztec who taught her son the native language. This relation of his parents has been listed as "spectulive". Luis de Carvajal had no son in the New World and adopted his sisters wife's son, Luis Rodriguez de Matos as his own, gave him his name and made him his heir to the Kingdom of Nueva Leon. Conquistador Luis de Carvajal did have a son in Spain but his son and wife would not make the journey to the New World and remained in Spain. It's all in the history books about Luis de Carvajal and the colonization of The Kingdom of Nueva Leon.

One of the best books I have come across is a book called "Luis de Carvajal : The origins of of Nuevo Reina Leon" by Samuel Temkin. In this book he describes Juan de Vittorio Carvajal and describes his as a nephew of Conquistador, Governor Luis de Carvajal. No where is he mentioned as a son. I do not know why hundreds of genealogist sites say different, as mentioned by someone below. I know that this relationship has been noted to be "speculative", but he is not the son of Conquistador Luis de Carvajal, that is for sure. Also notice that as noted below, in the book " The Adobe Kingdom" by Donald L. Lucero, he states that Juan Vitorio is the son of Juan de Carvajal and Isabel Holguin, but Isabel Holguin is the wife of Juan Vitorio not his mother. So there is a lot of confusion out there for sure. But a I am sticking to my story. Please contact me if you have further information.

Most of the hundreds of family trees in ancestry list Juan Vitorio’s father as Luis Carvajal. Jewish researchers noted that Vitorio set off with the colonists upon Luis’s arrest and they understood a familial relationship but unsure how.

From The Adobe Kingdom by Donald L. Lucero:

Carvajal, Juan de Vitoria (B. 1561-62) (Ayotepel, NS), son of Juan de Carvajal; husband of Isabel Holguin.

One of Onate's original settlers, this parent was described in 1598 and later in 1600 as having medium stature and a chestnut beard, well-featured, and having a mark on the right side of the face above the left eye. (Origins 14) (Clan 22-23) (Kiva 77) (Juan Holguin 258), AK 42, 47, 55, 175, Chart II.

Prior to being part of the Ornate colonization of New Mexico, Juan de Vitorio was part of the Luis de Carvajal colonization of Nueva Leon and also took part in the Sosa expedition in the illegal attempt to colonize New Mexico prior to the Ornate expedition. Juan de Vitorio was a nephew if Luis de Carvajal and served as a soldier and interpreter of Indian languages. His father was a conquistador and mother being Indian had taught her son her native tongue and Juan de Vitorio used this foundation to learn other languages.
