Message for the Curator

This Alexander Dunlap Sr was NOT the father of Elizabeth Warwick Sitlington (Dunlap) These two individuals described in this Geni profile were brother and sister. Check the dates..........both born circa 1716.....impossible for a father and his daughter.

Cross reference info provided in About section on Elizabeth's profile,

IE Elizabeth Warwick Sitlington (Dunlap)'s real name was Mary Elizabeth Dunlop instead of Elizabeth Ann Dunlap/Dunlop. Mary Elizabeth was born in Scotland and died circa or after 1805. She married William Warwick in 1738 in Augusta Co Virginia.

The parents of Capt Alexander and Mary Elizabeth were: Professor Alexander Dunlop - b.1682 Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland - d. 24 April 1747 Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland and Elizabeth Stewart of Hartwood.

www.clandunlop.com/dunlop_genealogy.htm Item #74.

Capt Alexander Dunlop Sr and Elizabeth Ann 'MacFarlane' were married in Scotland in 1737. Item #120

Their first child, George appears to have been born in Scotland = 1736 and died 1807. Item #120

Their other children (John, Robert, Alexander) included in this Geni profile are listed in the following reference.

There was also a daughter named Elizabeth Ann, born circa 1744 in Augusta Co VA.

It appears that this Elizabeth Ann Dunlap has been confused with Mary Elizabeth Dunlop (the true wife of William Warwick and Andrew Sitlington.

Captain Alexander Dunlap -- sometimes referred to as Alexander Dunlap "of Goshen, Virginia" [1] -- was born in 1712 (or 1716) and went from Pennsylvania with other settlers to a part of Augusta Co., VA called "The Pastures" in 1743 and was at the time the furthermost settler on the Virginia frontier. He was appointed Captain of Horse, but died in 1744. He married Ann(e) McFarlane/McFarland (1715-1786) in 1733. She was a descendant of Calan (or Caleb), Chief of Clan McFarlane who immigrated to Pennsylvania.[2] [3]

The Dunlap family is one of the oldest and most distinguished of the Scotch-Irish Presbyterian families of the south. Several kinsmen of the name, born in Ireland, settled in Augusta Co., VA about the middle of the 18th century, and from them have sprung many prominent descendants. [4]

This Alexander is sometimes referred to as Alexander II because his father was also an Alexander, but Alexander I is used here because Alexander's father came from a long line of Alexanders, and this Alexander was the first of his name in America.

There is disagreement among authors over which Ann McFarland this Alexander married. Some accounts have her as Jean Ann McFarland (b. c. 1721 in Ireland), the daughter of Duncan McFarland (c. 1695-1782) and Ann (or Elizabeth) Porter (c. 1700-____).[5] [6] Other accounts have her as the daughter of Robert, who married Esther Houston, and some say this Robert McFarland was the son of Duncan & Ann/Elizabeth.[7] [8] [9] Even another shows her as "Elisabeth Anne" the daughter of Caleb, Chiefton of Clan MacFarlane. [10] But regardless of which Ann McFarland is cited, the same three children's names appear: John, Robert, and Alexander.
