About Capt. Bracken Lewis
Capt. Bracken Lewis (1820-1908) was born at Floyd, Kentucky. He married Emiline Dickerson on January 11, 1849, in Washington County, Arkansas.
In 1850, he was a stone mason living in White River, Washington Co., Arkansas. (The Gibson’s lived on a neighboring farm with a child also named Bracken.) By 1860 they owned their own farm valued at $700. In 1865, he enlisted in the 1st Cavalry, B Company, of Arkansas.
He was listed as a self-employed mechanic in the 1880 census. Military records show that in 1890 he filed for a pension as “invalid”. Then in 1900, he was once again listed as a farmer. He and Emiline had six children: Albert Columbus (1860), Thomas (1863), Armelia (1866), Ulysses Grant (1868), Moses (1870), and Levi (1873). He died on June 3, 1908, at the age of 88, and was buried at Whitehouse Cemetery, Arnett, Washington County. His tombstone is engraved “Capt. Co. B Ark Infantry”.
