About Captain Christopher Hudson
Parents: John Hudson and Ann Jones of Albemarle Co, Va Grandparents: Charles Hudson and Sarah Royall of Hanover County, Va In 1730 Charles was the patentee of 2,000 acres on the Hardware below Carter's Bridge and within the next three years he obtained grants for sixteen hundred more in the same locality. It embraced Mt Ayre, which was one of the seats of the Hudson family for more than a hundred years. The stream entering the south side of the Hardware below Mount Ayre, was formerly known as Hudson's Creek. Christopher displayed more of the ability and thrift of his father than any other of his descendants. At the time of his death, which took place in 1825, he was the possessor of more than five thousand acres of land. He was appointed a magistrate in 1800. His home was at Mount Ayre. He married Sarah, daughter of David Anderson, and his children were Elizabeth, the wife of George Gilmer, and Ann, the wife of William Tompkins. His grandson, Gov Thomas Walker Gilmer, had charge of the administration of his large estate. The Mount Ayre home was built Rev War era and was no longer standing in 1939. Governor Thomas Walker Gilmer sold the home in 1838 to John Diggs Moon and his wife Elizabeth.

Capt Christopher Hudson served in LaFayette's Army in Rev. War. Went to warn Jefferson at Monticello that the British were coming finding Jefferson had already been warned by Jack Jouett of Louisa, who had arrived shortly before him. He saw Jefferson make his escape, and 10 minutes later, he saw British Captain McCleod arrive and surround the house. He was in Richmond when British General Benedict Arnold made his second invasion of Virginia.
