About Capt Dean Alfred Hatfield
Dean Alfred Hatfield, a resident of the Lee's Summit area since his retirement in 1978, was born May 29, 1919 in Wichita, Kansas. He graduated from Wichita University with a Masters Degree in Mathematics following WWII. He taught High School mathematics for three years. He then joined the National Security Agency, Washington, D.C. where he worked as a systems analyst until his retirement. For his work with this Agency he received the Meritorious Civilian Service Award. Mr. Hatfield spent four and one half years in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII. He held every rank from Private to Captain. He spent one year in the China Burma India Theater flying war materials from India to China over the Himalaya Mountains to the Chinese and American Forces in China. Following Japan's surrender, he flew Nationalist Chinese Troops into areas of China which had been occupied by the Japanese in effort to beat the Chinese Communists there. For these efforts he received the Breast Order of Yun Hui from the Nationalist Chinese Government and the Air Medal from the USAAC. Prior to his overseas assignment, he flew a hospital ship picking up wounded and he also served a tour as flight instructor. Mr. Hatfield married Audrey Durtschi of Wood River, NE in Nov 1946. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife Audrey in 2002. Survivors include: his wife, Madeline Hatfield; two daughters, Susan Hatfield of Lee's Summit, MO and Dr. Marsa Hatfield of Salem, CT; two grandchildren, Dr. Emily Horn of Evergreen, CO and Andrew Aultman of New Britain, CT. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Wayside Waifs Animal Shelter. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 16, 2013 at the Floral Hills East Cemetery, Lee's Summit.
