Obit: CAPTAIN F. W. PAUL, WAR VETERAN DIES -- Has Fatal Attack of Heart Disease at Villa Nova Home -- Member of Distinguished Philadelphia Family and Served With Distinction in Civil War.

Captain Frank W. Paul, who served with distinction in the Civil War, died from heart disease, at his home, Gray Gables, at Villanova, last Tuesday [December 24, 1912]. Captain Paul was a member of a distinguished Philadelphia family and was a brother-in-law of William Waldorf Astor, and was connected by marriage with many well-known New Yorkers.

Captain Paul was the eldest son of James W. Paul, a famous lawyer of this city, and was born in Italy, on October 14, 1841. He entered Harvard College, with the class of 1857, but was compelled to withdraw on account of poor health. He subsequently the University of Pennsylvania, as a sophomore, in the class of 1861, and was a senior at the institution, when he enlisted for the Civil War as a corporal in the Commonwealth Artillery.

Shortly afterwards, he was appointed second lieutenant of the Fifty-eighth Pennsylvania Regiment, and later became first lieutenant of the Independent Battery of Captain Paul T. Jones, which was later transferred to the Second Pennsylvania Artillery. Captain Paul continued in the service throughout the war, and at one time was the acting assistant adjutant general of the Eighteenth Artillery. He was breveted captain fro bravery at the battle of Petersburg and was also breveted major.

...In 1868 he retired from the army and studied law with his father, subsequently being admitted to the local bar.
…Captain Paul's sister, Miss Mary R. Paul, was married to William Waldorf Astor. Another sister, Miss Lillie Paul, became the wife of Thomas Gaylord, of New York. His brothers were the late James W. Paul, of Drexel and Company, and Lawrence P. Paul, of this city.
… Captain Paul was married to Miss Florence Oglesby, of New Orleans. He is survived by his four children, Mrs. Mary L. Bland, of Baltimore, and Mrs. Margaret P. Kane, Oglesby Paul, and Frank W. Paul, Jr., of this city.
