Graduated from the U. S. Military Academy with the Class of 1863. He was 18th in a class of 25.
New York Tribune, Tuesday, July 9, 1878: "The funeral of Captain George D. Ramsay, of the Ordnance Corps, and second son of Brevet Major General George D. Ramsay, U. S. A., took place this evening at 6 o'clock from St. John's Episcopal Church. The pall-bearers were Colonel Linford and Major McKee, of the Ordnance Corps; Colonel Pennington and Captain Wilson, of the Artillery; Major Twining, of the Engineer Corps and District Commissioner, and Colonel Benjamin, of the Adjutant-General's office. The services were conducted by the Rev. Drs. Clark and Harrold. A large number of Army officers were in attendance, among whom were General Sherman and his staff. The remains were interred at Oak Hill Cemetery, a detachment of infantry and the Marine Band acting as an escort."
Two of his West Point classmates, McKee and Twining, served as pallbearers.
George Douglas Ramsay was commissioned an officer in the Regular Army 1st Light Artillery Regiment on 11 Jun 1863. Mustered out on 06 Nov 1863. Transferred to the Regular Army Ordnance Corps Infantry on 06 Nov 1863. Promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on 06 Nov 1863. Promoted to Brevet Captain on 13 Mar 1865.
