"Pioneer woman Adela Stewart worked tremendously hard during her time as the social queen of Athenree in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. Resourceful, capable, and hospitable, she led entertainments, balls, dances, and picnics from Athenree Homestead that often lasted until dawn. She also hosted the many notables of the day, such as Richard Seddon and Te Kooti. Adela's record of this time, My Simple Life in New Zealand, is full of humorous anecdotes and recipes, and is recognised as one of the most honest and insightful glimpses into the early days of European settlers in Aotearoa New Zealand."
