About Capt. Mervyn Stewart, JP

Mervyn Stewart was the second son of John and Mary Stewart (nee Archdale). His mother died when he was a young boy and he was raised by his grandparents at Castle Archdale. Entering the Royal Navy he served aboard the HMS Dreadnought and HMS Temeraire. He also trained at Trinity College in Dublin, and was appointed Captain in the Tyrone Militia, then the 21st Light Dragoons in 1815. On 17 August 1878 Mervyn and wife Fanny, aged 88 and 78, arrived in New Zealand aboard the Lady Jocelyn.
