James Abbott was born in Windham, Connecticut in 1753. His father, Abiel, was a grantee in the Susquehana Purchase of 1754. Abiel gave half of this right to James' older brother Philip in 1722. Philip was allotted lot #34 in the town plot, lot #44 in the first division, lot #37 in the third division and lot #11 in the fourth division. These lots he owned until September 23, 1777 when he conveyed them to his brother James, who June 13, 1787 sold them to Matthias Hollenback. ( Taken from History of Wilkes-Barre by Oscar Jewell Harvey.)

James came from Wyoming [Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania - site of the Wyoming Massacre July 3,1778] to the Canisteo Valley [New York] and settled near Arkport about 1806. His tombstone bears the following inscription: "To the Memory of James Abbott, one of the patriots of 1776, who died May 2, 1830. Aged 77 years." (See also an Historical Sketch of Arkport, written by William Hurlbut, printed in the Canisteo Valley Times in 1876.)

James and his wife Phoebe operated a linen weaving mill.
