About Capt James Brown

Capt. James Brown III was the eldest child of Capt. James Brown II [1697-1739] and Hope Power [1701-1792]. Their father, a sea captain, died at sea while they were young, and James and his siblings were raised by their uncle, Obadiah Brown. Just like his father, James III also died at sea at a young age. He didn't live to see his enterprising younger brothers inherit a thriving mercantile business and spermaceti candle manufactory from their uncle in 1762. They became known collectively as "Four Brown Brothers", and would make their marks in history as sucessful entrepreneurs, philanthropists, and patriots involved in the notorius Gaspee Affair.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Mar 24 2020, 4:18:39 UTC
