James Green was the son of William Greene Jr. and Desire Bacon of Barnstable, MA. James was born in Massachusetts on 17 Sep 1728. His older brothers had moved to the Middle Haddam – Middletown area of Connecticut in 1742 and James followed at some point. He married in East Haddam on February 18, 1754 to Ruth Marshall. Otis, in his Barnstable Families, says he "was a blacksmith, and a Captain in the French War".
James was commissioned, March, 1774, by the Provincial Assembly, Captain of the First Troop of the Twelfth (Conn.) Regiment; and held his rank through the Revolutionary War, serving in the Second (Conn.) Regiment, Light Horse, at the battle of White Plains; and with Major Elijah Hyde's same Regiment at the capture of General Burgoyne and the battles around Saratoga.
It is also of interest that Nathan Hale, while teaching school at East Haddam, in the winter of 1773-4, lived with his family.
He was a selectman, and often moderator of town meetings, for many years; was chairman of the board to make the town's quota for troops; and held other offices. When the government was established, he was chosen as the first postmaster. His widow died November 27, 1816. They had nine children, all born in East Haddam and baptized at the First Orthodox Church. Find A Grave contributor Alan and Jane
