Capt. Jeruel West was a Tisbury mariner. He was the son of Capt. Peter West and Elizabeth (Athearn) Chase, and the husband of Deborah Shaw. Five months after he was married, in Oct. 1775, Jeruel enlisted in the Navy as a private in Capt. Nathan Smith's Company stationed at Martha's Vineyard for Sea Coast Defense. In Jan. 1776 he was promoted to Corporal, and served until Sept. 1776.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Jan 11 2022, 7:00:34 UTC
