About Capt. John Baker

http://www.americanancestors.org/databases/american-genealogist-the...

Capt John Baker (John1), baptized at Woodbury, 11 Apr 1703, died (called Deacon John) at Roxbury, CT, 11 No 1787. John Baker Jr., was confirmed Lieutenant of the west company in Woodbury, May 1738 and (called simply John) Captain of the same company, Oct 1740. [Col. Rec. of Conn, 8:163, 341]
His marriage has not been found recorded, but his wife was called Patience in the birth record of one of his older children. She was most probably his first cousin, Patience Hurlbut, born at Woodbury, 2 Sept. 1705, daughter of John and Mercy (Salmon) Hurlbut. Cothren's History 3:11 wrongly reads the name of Patience Hurlbut's mother as Mary instead of Mercy; in the genealogy [1:581] he has the name right but wrongly makes the date of Patience's birth 20 instead of 2 Sept. No marriage has ever been found for this Patience Hurlbut. No other Patience of any surname was recorded as born or baptized in Woodbury as a proper date for Baker's wife. John and Patience Baker named their first child Mercy and shen she died young, gave that name to a younger child.
Mercy, wife of John Hurlbut died 6 Mar 1717, and he thereafter married a widow Ruth (Stiles) Wheeler. By Mercy he had six children recorded: Patience, Nathan, Salmon, Experience, a second Experience, and Mercy (who died young.) He died in 1738 and his will, made 22 Feb 1731/2, proved 21 Feb 1737/8, named his sons Nathan and Salmon and daughters Patience and Experience, but married names of the daughters were not stated. The marriage intention of Experience Hurlbut was recorded in Springfield, MA on 10 Aprl 1736, to Christopher Fowler, b. 29 Oct 1708, died 8 Oct 1742, and she married second, 22 Sept. 1748, Jonathan Worthington. On 3 Apr 1744, Capt. John Baker bought land from Salmon Hurlbut of Woodbury, his brother-in-law if our theory is correct.
