The subject of this miniature was probably the John Cowman listed in the New York Directory from 1816-18 as a shipmaster. He was the father of Augustus Thomas Cowman and the grandfather of Mrs. George Carter, who was the aunt of the donor's husband.
The Cowman and Burling land was on the Bowery Road, remote from the then downtown NYC. The families' properties from a mapping perspective border modern Union Square and were just north of the marginally larger Spingler farm.
