In 1667 John was a proprietor of the town of Newark. He represented Newark at the general court from 1683-1688. John married Hannah Preston (3964) , daughter of William Preston (1596) (ca 1590-1647) & Mary Seabrook (ca 1601-aft 1680). Born ca 1636. Hannah died bef 21 Oct 1701.

Hiswife Hanah, was executor and inherited the personal property. The real property was given to William Wilson of Nework and cousin John Curtis of Stratford, (the son of his brother Benjamin Curtis of Stratford.) Rev. Iabos Wakeman and Lieut. Eliphalet Johnson were named overseers. Witnesses--Joseph Harison, Nathaniel Ward, Joseph Baldwin, Zopher Beach. The wording of the will indicates he had no living children. John Curtiss moved to Newark, Essex County, New Jersey when he became of age. In 1667 he was the proprietor of the town of Newark. He represented Newark at the general court from 1683-1688 as an assessor and commissioner for Essex County.
