Capt. John Dent

Capt. John Dent (1640-1712) immigrated to MD in 1643 with his father George Dent (1620-1712) & two Uncles, Peter Dent (1624-1689) & Thomas Dent (1628-1676). Two other younger uncles, John Dent (1630-1693) & William Dent (1632-1647) stayed at the Guisborough Mannor in Durham (Yorkshire), England to help manage the Manor & be with their parents. He inherited the lands of his uncle Thomas Dent, 1628 of Guisborough, Yorkshire, England. Under the will in Charles County, MD, which was executed in 1690 and proved in 1708. He owned other estates besides.

John was Commissioner and Justice of the Peace, 1679, 1680, 1685 for St. Marys County, MD. He served against the Indians at Susquehanna Fort, 1681 and was appointed Captain of Chaptico Hundred 1689. Captain of the Foot in 1694. Appointed by William and Mary Commission from King Charles II of England and a member of the Kings Council for MD.

As early as 1681, he was involved with Josias Fendall, former Governor of the Province, and Capt. John Coode in their attempt to overthrow the rule of Lord Baltimore. They failed at that time but were successful in 1689.

Apparently Capt. Dent discovered the healing qualities of his spring,"Cool Springs", and word soon spread about it' s powers and the fight was on between the Dents, the Church and the State over the use and ownership of the spring. In November 1, 1698 The Lower House ordered that a committee be formed to purchase 50 acres for the use of Cool Springs and if the owner objected, then to exercise the right so feminent domain. So it went.

• It has been pointed out that Thomas Dent claimed headrights in 1663 and 1676, respectively, for the transportation of one John Dent. The question arises whether these John Dents are the one and the same. Most likely they are. It is possible and quite probable that John Dent settled in Maryland about 1658, returned to England, and again entered the Province about 1676. And there are definite circumstances which indicate that he probably married in England and left a wife or orphaned children in England.
• Nothing has been unearthed to prove the degree of relationship which existed between Thomas and John, but it was popularly stated to be that of brothers. Modern research, however, has now proved the fallibility of that assumption. John could have been a nephew of Thomas, and thus a son of the elder brother William (see pedigree on page 4). John was too old to be the son of Peter Dent, of Cambridge, and likewise to be a son of the younger brother George. It is noted, however, that the name of Peter appears among the children of both Thomas and John, thus strengthening the belief that they were the descendants of Peter Dent, of Gisborough. ....

• Returning to the belief that John Dent married in England, it is significant that at the time of his death he had a son living outside of the Province. In his will he mentioned a son Peter who was bequeathed property on the condition "if he comes into this Province to inhabit". Thus it looks as if Peter had never been in Maryland which substantiates the supposition that John Dent married before his final departure for Maryland and left a child or children in England. It is also significant that in 1677 John Harris proved rights for 50 acres of land for the transportation of Abigail Dent who could have been a daughter left in Yorkshire.1 And John Dent in his will provided for a spinster daughter Abigail.
• Whether John Dent was a bachelor or widower at the time of his settlement in Maryland is consequently a debatable question, but it is known that sometime before 1678 he had married Mary, the daughter of John Hatch, an interesting character in early Maryland history.

• .... He married a daughter of John Hatch, a well-known liberal and opportunis who rose to importance during the Commonwealth. From 1654 to 1658 John Hatch was a member of the commission or governing body of the Province which under the chairmanship of Richard Preston ruled the colony for four years or so. .....
• During the sessions of the Council regarding the investigations emanating from Fendall's Rebellion, Thomas Perry, of St. Mary's County, under oath on October 12, 1682, made several reference to John Dent which prove absolutely his marriage to a daughter of John Hatch. Perry thus state, ". . . if he (Dent) had declared all that he know against Ffendall and which he (Dent) heard Ffendall say at his ffather in law Hatch's funeral he (Dent) could have hang'd him . . ."*** ______________

He lived 6 miles away in Guisborough, North Riding of Yorkshire, England. The town and valley of Dent is about 70 miles west of Guisborough. Peter died in August 1647 at Guisborough. Margaret was born at Hutton, Yorkshire, England.
