John was the son of Anne (perhaps Barry) and Edmund Goodenow. He married Mary Axtell on September 19, 1656 in Sudbury, Massachusetts. Mary was the daughter of Mary (Rice) and Thomas Axtell.

John and Mary were the parents of twelve children:

After the death of his wife, Mary, he married Mary Stone in December of 1705. Mary was the widow of Thomas Walker of Sudbury, Massachusetts.

In 1697 Capt. John was convicted of adultery and was forced to resign from all offices78 Publicly the Capt. had monopolized town offices and corruptly misued his power. 79 He cheated at horse trading, been censured for drunkenness by fellow church members and attended only half the services.80 A complaint was filed "When he is absent from meeting, the wife of John Brooks is absent also"81 Mary Clap complained that " Being at John Brooks house during meeting Capt. John Goodenow entered. When he thought me asleepe he went to the bedside where Goodwife Brooks lay. I did hear then discorse in such a manner as was not mete for any but a man and his wife. The wife of John Brooks said that the custom of women was uppon her and that her body was much swollen. Capt. Goodenow said he hoped not so. Goody Brooks said it is & if you will not believe me....." 82 Other accusations were made against the Captain. concerning his behavior with Mrs. Brooks.83


John Goodenow was born about 1635 in Dunhead, St. Andrew, Wiltshire, England. He was the first of six children of Edmund Goodenow and Anne Hannah Barry.

In 1638, John's family and a significant portion of his extended family sailed to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the ship "Confidence," arriving in New England on April 24. They settled in Sudbury, Massachusetts where John would remain for the rest of his life.

Mary Axtell was christened on September 25, 1639 in Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire, England. She was the oldest of three children of Thomas and Mary Axtell. The Axtell family emigrated to Massachusetts about 1643.

John Goodenow and Mary Axtell were married in Sudbury on September 19, 1656. John worked as a farmer and served as a captain in the militia. The couple had twelve children. Mary (Axtell) Goodenow died in Sudbury on April 14, 1704 at about age 64.

In 1705, John, then about 70 years old, married Mary Stone.

John lived to be about 86. He died in Sudbury on August 6, 1721.


Arrived aboard the ship Confidence in 1638. Freeman in 1673. A captain of the militia. Served in King Philips War.
