About Capt. John Hamilton Irving

Details: Tuesday 4th May 1880, The West Australian Newspaper. A correspondent in New Zealand writes to me that there are three native-born Australians in the Northern district of NZ. One of them is John Irving of the Bay of Islands now 84. He was born in Sydney and had a native wife who died lately who was also a good age.

John Hamilton was listed as "mariner, of Sydney" in 1822 [14], a "boat builder, of Newcastle" in 1823-25 [16], a "shipwright, of Darling Harbour" in 1828 [8] and was on a 31/3/22 "list of persons to whom convict mechanics have been assigned", being "of Sydney" [15]. He applied for permission to build two vessels to trade between Sydney and Newcastle on 6/7/24 [15]. With family, he and Ann spent some time, probably 1823-26, in the Newcastle/Hexham area; . John Hamilton (boatbuilder of Cockle Bay) was on "a list of persons liable to serve as Jurors in the district of Sydney" in 1/11/25 [15]. He died in Waitangi, NZ on 16/1/83 [11]. The son of JOHN IRVING and ANN MARSH, named JOHN after his father, trained in His Majesty’s Ship Yard in Sydney and later hunted whales in the Southern Ocean and also made at least 2 voyages to London He married ANN PARTRIDGE on 19th. May 1818. They had five children: CLARENCE WILLIAM, who died at the age of 7 years, EMMELINE IRVING who married DAVID REID SHEARER in Sydney.
