About Capt. Joseph Mason Bishop

Married his first cousin.

He stayed in Surry Co, Virgina until bout 1820. According to a family bible held by the descendants of James Mason Bishop, he died Aug. 18, 1858. We know he died at Iuka Mississippi. He was the first to be buried in the Bishop Family Cementary. Some time after May 1860 and before the 1860 census Mary Susanna Bishop died and became the second person to be buried in the Bishop Family Cemetery. This information comes from a letter written by Joseph Mason Bishop, son of Joseph Mason Bishop and Mary Susanna Bishop, That was to his first cousin.

Joseph Mason Bishop and his wife lived on land gotten in a land grant for serving in the war of 1812 in Tishomingo Co. Missippi. This land is the land around the Bishop Family Cemetary. Their home was just behind the cemetary. His son and later his Grandson Lived just across highway 72 this area is known as Bishiop Bottom.

Joseph Mason Bishop left Surry Co. Virigna in 1820 in search of new land. Legend has it that Joseph and two brothers headed west. One setted in Adamsville, Tennesse, Joseph Mason around Tishimingo Co. Missippi and the other in Alabama. Joseph Mason was next found in 1830 in what was McNairy Co. Tennesse. The first record in Mcnary Co. was Joseph and William Bishop sold 145 Acres to Tobis Long.

Joseph and Mary Bishop next show up in Missippi with the first land grant.

From land grants and other records we know that Joseph could read and write. How ever Mary could do neither, she always made marks that were wittnessed and signed . This was not unusal since people did not see much reason for women to read or write at this time.
